One Poem by Leslie Alexis

One

I catch their wind
In each gasp of breath
A little of my neighbor
Of men alive,
Of men who've seen death
Becomes part of me.
I am a sea
Of history,
Of black,
White, brown,
Every color
in-between.
I am the queen
I am the king,
Princess and prince
From time since
Time… I am.
I am the poor
The wise, the dumb;
Solomon's substance I know.
I am the plum,
Cherry and prune,
I am your broom,
Your sugar so sweet,
The charming pup
Clawing at your feet,
I am. I am the lamb
And I am the lion,
I am but one
With the grass
Trodden upon
By mules like me.
I am the future,
Your sons,
Your daughters.
Each day I am,
And when I die
I will be,
For we are but one.
