One Of The Stars Tonight Poem by Kate Austin

One Of The Stars Tonight

people say things are meant to be
but if they were then why can't you see
what you did was awfully wrong
this doesn't mean anything, this mournful song
that's on the radio, it reminds me of you
you're gone but the sky's still blue
the world didn't crash and the sky didn't fall
i got it that morning, the heatbreaking call
i thought it was a joke, something to laugh at
and then i was rooted to the spot where i sat
i did not cry that day, didn't shed a tear
something in me died that day, that much was clear
you were like a second father to me
but now you'll never see my family
tonight there's a river beside my bed
this one is clear instead of red
there's salt on my tongue and tracks on my cheeks
i fight back tears but they somehow still leak
i know you are one of the stars up in the sky
looking down on me from way up high
