Only The Fool Poem by Wakefield Mahon

Only The Fool

Only the fool would play at this game
To seek after that which only brings pain
Why should I forfeit all that I could be
Pursuing the shadow of strange fantasy

I stare at the wall. Why, what is this for?
I've never defeated temptation before.
Remember the promise you made last year?
Remember the guilt? Remember the fear?

See how it glitters
That doesn't mean it’s gold
Here’s something you must conquer
And this time you'll be bold
The choice now lies before you.
Is yours a faithless heart?
Is it worth a fleeting thought
to tear your soul apart?

Only a fool would break her heart
Only a fool would tear this apart
After all those quiet nights
The joys, the tears the ended fights
After all that we've been through
What am I supposed to do
When I'm only the fool?

[This time you'll be bold! ]
