Opposite Poem by Aparna Chatterjee

Opposite

Looking
At our
Driveway
They can
Make out
That we are
Just the
Opposites

His is the
Viano,
Eight-seater
Mine is the
Smart,
Two-seater

And it's just not
About cars,
In our everyday
Lives, we are
Opposites in
Very many ways

In so many ways,
That at times,
It delights us
At times,
It surprises us
And at times,
It really annoys
Us.

So much so,
For an
Arranged
Marriage
Based on
Horoscopes.

If we were
So well-matched,
Why we weren't
Similar, instead of
Being different in so
Many ways....

We could have
Shared the same
Hobbies, the same
Places, the same food,
The same books, the
Same tastes, the same
Likes and dislikes....

Life would have been
Easier with so much
More similar, but then
I guess, we were destined
To be opposites, not just
Opposites, but absolute
Opposites, and we keep
Wondering how come our
Horoscopes matched us
And are horoscopes
Reliable when it comes
To matching couples...?

If yes, then how come
In this world of astrologers
And match-makers, there are
So many broken marriages,
So many divorcees, and
So many young widows?
