Proposing With A Promise Poem by Imaanah Saleem

Proposing With A Promise

I want to say I do
Don't want to say I don't
I want to say I'll marry you
But for some odd reason I won't
There is something holding me back
My conscience?
I would imagine so
Part of me wants to say yes
But I refuse
Because another says no
I am currently stuck in confusion
My feelings are split in two
There is conflict instilled within myself
And the topic is you
I could tell that you thought this would be easy
After all
You came with collateral
A genuine ring in place of my heart
If only it were that simple
Yes
It is true that women love such gorgeous things
Jewelry especially
But a diamond ring can't be the only thing that you promise to give to me
If you promise to love me
Show me that you care
Promise that you'll never leave
That you'll always be there
Promise to support me
I need to know that I could count on you
Promise to be my protector
And to be strong when I am unable to
Promise me that when times get hard
You'll work harder to make things better
If you propose to me with these promises
Then I'll promise you my heart forever…
