Rejoice Poem by Mitchell Hood

Rejoice

You and I are so familiar, but my face you’ve never seen
I’ve been there and I’ve been back, we met somewhere between
I do not have a name but you know me just as well
Somewhere in your deepest thoughts, a picture of me dwells
You’ve seen me many times; I’ve taken several forms
But I have always been there, in fair weather or in storm
I came to you as a helping hand when you needed me the most
You feared not my transcendence, nor the power I did boast
I came to guide you on your way, to walk you through the dark
I came as Malcolm, I came as Ali, I came as Rosa Parks
I came as Martin Luther King. I saw the thousands march
And every one stood tall with me, no weary back did arch
I came as Shakespeare, I came as Socrates, I came as Leonardo Da Vinci
I came as the Emperor Julius Caesar. Veni Vidi Vici
I came as Lincoln, I came as Kennedy, I came as Pierre Trudeau
I shaped the world and changed your lives, created everything you know
I came as the Pope, I came as the profit, I came as the president
I came from above you, I came from within you, some say I’m heaven sent
I am your conscience, I am your pride, I recite this as your voice
I live forever without a name, but in my eternal presence, rejoice
