Simple Poem by Cigeng Zhang

There is an old woman
Crouching at a corner
Under a red brick wall
Reading a picture-book

Someone passing by
Laugh at her a bit silly
Someone seeing her
Laugh at her too childish

I stop by, looking at her
Her carefree smile on her lips
Telling me how happy she is
Why not, squat down next to her

Lean on the wall and close my eyes
In the Sept mild sun, feel the breeze
Brushing lightly on my face
Murmuring a word softly, softly to me

Hi Cigeng, In the Sept mild sun Feel the breeze Brushing lightly on my face Murmuring a word softly, softly to me The mood of the poem is enhanced word by word, right from the start to peak in the above lines. Cigeng, you are a gifted poet. Know how to choose your words to bring out the mood! Extra ordinarily brilliant poem. Thanks for sharing.

This poem stops the rush of life and takes the precious time to honor a simple woman who teaches you, then us a complex lesson - and there are so many different to articulate that lesson! Here's just one: The woman who seems so alone and forlorn is really happy, it's no secret to her, she is simply and completely at one with life. But the last stanza is the surprise when you treat yourself almost like a separate character and what you see is someone completely at one with the world and herself. And the September breeze is like a kiss as well as a word, I would not presume to know what that word is but this I am certain of - you will carry it inside of you forever. This is a wonderful poem! and

Lovely poem. Simple words that carry a Zen message. Happiness comes to those who live a simple life, with no attachments, just appreciating nature's joys which are everywhere.
