So Close (A Song) Poem by Jade Leven

So Close (A Song)

everything I ever had
burned out like a candle, you know
stranded on a riverbank
the rain is raising the waterline, so slow

and it's so close
to filling up the last little spaces
and I'm still finding pain
in the least expected places

to the city now, look with me
the hearts are floating on the sea
like candles, shining brighter than the stars
why do they have to be so far?
no one knows where they are going just yet
just launch your soul on a ship and place your bet
in the water, there's a reflection of the setting sun
Manhattan, June 18th,6: 31

who am I, where am I?
just dreaming my way into these black high-heeled shoes
what am I doing here?
don't turn around, just listen to the rhythm and blues
who are you, where are you?
just hoping your way into something so fake
what are you doing here?
you're throwing it all away with a choice that you make

blue sky fading to red
soon it will be black
I'm trying to figure out
if I want to take anything back

and I am so close
to being whole again tonight
I can feel you here with me, as always
only this time it actually feels right

to the spotlight now, look with me
she's everything I want to be
she sings about everything she sees
as her fingers press against the keys
where is she going, she doesn't know now
she just fills her lungs with oxygen and lets it out somehow
in her eyes, you see her sadness, anyone would agree
Hollywood, December 12th,9: 53

what I would give to be... so close, so close
to my dreams, the ones that I will never reach at all
what they would give to be... so far, so far
from another show, another song, another empty phone call
someone's always telling them to come home
I think they probably feel like they're completely on their own
with all the admiration that they receive
it's only a friend or a lover they'll believe

and what I would give to be... so close, so close
to my dreams, the ones I lock away inside of me
what they would give to be... so far, so far
from what they are
and wishing themselves away like me
