Softly Have I Loved Poem by Thomas Noel Smith

Softly Have I Loved

Softly have I loved
Tenderly have I spoken
The sounds that cling to the air
Like the fragrance of magnolias
In the summer

Warmly have I embraced
And boldly did I hold
All that I thought dear.
And songs passed from me
Easily.

But the words…...
The thoughts, the hopes
The rhymes, the dreams
Fell in the well-worn ruts
Of dusty country roads.
Noticed by few
Forgotten by all.

But softly did I love
Tenderly did I speak
The sounds that seemed to cling to the air
Like the fragrance of magnolias
In a summer so long ago, so long ago.
