Spirit - Poem by M.J. Lemon

The balance between left and right
Where guilty extremes grow contrite...
Is the spirit a purple thing?

As the body copes with aging
The veins and skull fill with raging
Is the spirit a purple thing?

If all stained glass ensnares pure love
Fervor, pride belong to faith above
Is the spirit a purple thing?

A warm softness gives forth the rock
And anguish rests upon a block
Is your spirit a purple thing?

Around the neck every Thursday
For the regal head it must stay
Is the spirit a purple thing?

Your mission to calm and to cure
Subverts, mystifies, the allure!
Is the spirit a purple thing?

Favoured by the young and mourning
it bestows a wartime warning
Is the spirit a perfect thing?

    Age may play its part
    but why we should depart?
from being so useful to self and family
everything comes there after like world and society (Report) Reply

PLEASE don't take this the wrong way. but..... this poem is perplexing; not sure if it is also purple. perhaps it is.

i'm a simple kind of guy. at least some people call me simple. and though no one has called me 'purple', i DO have a poem on PH entitled Purple. i discovered today (2015) that i used my REAL FIRST name in it in error. that is 'being changed', but if you hurry you may catch it. you might be able to use it to blackmail (or purplemail) me.

I think, I hope, the poem is a little purple. Just read your homage to Purple...and, well, any opportunity to purplemail seems to be lost.

    Poets always looking for answers,
Deep into Life, Deep into Soul,
Trying to decipher the mystery of it All.

This poem enjoys one of those wonderful illuminated moments. We know so little about our inner self, our spirit., our choices, between good and evil. This poem guides us to meditation about so many mysteries in a most poetic and beautiful way. Well done! (Report) Reply

    Sandra,
Thank you so much! You said exactly what I tried to do with this poem. Thank you.

Your poem of inquiry catches me by surprise. Each stanza is thoughtfully crafted, although I admit that I do not necessarily understand every stanza. I'd love a back story for this composition. (Report) Reply

    Michelle,
Thank you so much. What I tried to do with this poem was to use the meaning or meanings of purple to explore our inner condition, our spirit or soul. In some cultures, purple is associated with strength and aristocracy, in others it has ideological connotations, while in still other contexts it is a colour that symbolically balances life and death....I've been working on this poem for some time, and only recently came to the realization that purple, as Sandra says above, can serve to divide stark choices, right and wrong, that the poem just came into being. Thanks again for your wonderful comments.

Wonderful poem. Spirit could be perfect only if it finds a way beyond left and right, beyond all the definitions that a human mind can think of. What human spirit can find is harmony not perfection. Enjoyed your poem very much. (Report) Reply

Is the spirit a purple thing? an interesting question is this.
Purple symbolizes wisdom, magic and mystery. We feel all the three in that what we call a spirit. If wisdom is on the vertex and other other two at the vertices of the base it's wisdom that tries to control the triangle but often one of the two wheels of the chariot is slipped. so how the spirit can be a perfect thing?
A poem is wonderful if it touches a heart or a brain both and its a touching poem.................10 (Report) Reply
