Step Slowly, On Your Toes,



Step slowly, on your toes,
On this that was common ground
Down-trod by thousand soles
And more in morning
Now in the night
It has become of sacred:
See
See,
Smell the incense divine
Of the old ancient gods:
It comes not from the spare trees
That look on proudly:
Silence is the key.
O! that silence were the key
The dorsal spine of History!
Below
The port glares with lights
Divers and moving here
And there
Like glow-worms of the night
Like shrouds and ghosts
In flight:
Step slowly, on your toes,
On this that was common ground
