Sun On My Skin Part 2 Poem by Paula Glynn

Sun On My Skin Part 2

The tropical sun shines down upon my skin,
As I taste mangos and pineapples,
The sun caressing my soul,
With its dry heat, but I am not dying in this desert.
I am walking through the unrelenting sun,
Life hard work everyday, not living for fun,
And I hear those drums playing in my head,
Counting my every step along the way,
And I feel my skin become dry in the heat,
For there is no summer rain or winter snow,
And there is a place I must go,
To reach my future, reach my goal,
Life not a party on the beach,
And I feel my dreams are within my reach.
I strive hard everyday in this harsh sun,
A foreign language on my lips,
And I see my future somewhere safe,
Somewhere different, somewhere I can breathe,
But I am not lost: on the contrary I am free,
I have business to attend, yet choose for myself,
I have a goal to reach and a life to live,
And there is something cleansing about the hot sun:
It makes me feel as if I am home again,
For the tropical sun is my best friend in this life,
And for the best, I look forward and do strive.
I also enjoy the nights when I get release from the heat,
And I see how my skin has tanned,
And I do look how I should,
For this life is good, and I have nothing to regret,
So tomorrow I shall feel the sun once again,
The ground dry and dusty beneath my feet,
My skin deep brown and accustomed to the heat.
