Tears Poem by Rajnish Manga

Tears

Rating: 4.1

It was a star sprinkled sky
And the ground below
Was a bit subdued by dew.
‘Tears for the dead body
of a new born girl child
abandoned so mercilessly
By the unkindest society? '
Not likely. A few stray dogs
Scheming to tear it apart
While the country kept worshipping
Goddess Durga in temples and homes.

It is irrational and illogical to worship Durga in my opinion. I am wary of dogs, large and small. I avoid them.

During Navatatri (Nine Nights devoted to Goddess' worship) festival, eighth day is also observed to worship small girls being the symbols of Goddess Durga herself. So, when a newly born girl is abandoned by parents to die shows the hypocrisy of our society. Thanks for kind comments.

We still hate birth of a female child, the question arises why? A girl when grows and is married a lot of money is needed as dowry for her marriage. A touching poem.

A collective awareness and will is required to challenge the obscurantism to end the rot at grass-root level and other strata of our social hierarchy for supporting the cause. Thanks, Geeta ji.

This is a heart rending poem that your conscience. What is happening? Are we not bothered about the terrible things and atrocities? I feel so saddened and upset with such incidents. But again, we are mere onlookers unable to do anything concrete to change the mindset of the people. So beautifully presented Rajnish ji. Thank you.10+++

Geeta ji! The current state is just appalling. No one knows for how long the curse will abate. Things will change but the momentum or the push is not up to the desired level. Thanks for sharing your views on the subject. The questions call for answers.

This was a difficult subject to deal with but you handled it with great poetic maturity and sensitivity. Unless and until the society as a whole decides to reform its patriarchal, frankly inhumane, values such atrocities will continue. I just hope that that time comes sooner than later. A very strong poem Mr Manga. Thanks for sharing.
