The Dance Poem by Khauri Teverbaugh

The Dance

I gasp as you take your stance,
You make my hips move at your will,
pull me and push me into your rhythm...
and make my body wait for...
the tiniest movement in your fingertips....
to set my body in a new direction
I feel as though I am floating, gliding as my feet
barely touch the floor.

Increase the tempo as you lead, make me follow
Working harder and faster to keep up
You give me goosebumps from the touch...
of my own skin.
My back arches yet my shoulders relax
Closing my eyes I am surrounded in a world of darkness
Feeling the intensity of a spanish guitar somewhere in the distance
yet hearing only the steady beat of our hearts....
driving us faster.

Trying hard to catch my breath, keep my head from spinning
You take me by surprise, suddenly lifted....
and coming down from that high
I can not help but smile seeing,
sweat glisten
Being pulled into once more, finally
the spot light lifts and applause
brings chills down my spine.
