The Helderberg Remembering Poem by Gert Strydom

The Helderberg Remembering

(for Annelize)

Red-brown and yellow the leaves did fall,
fog covered everything and a fine drizzle was everywhere,
unexpectedly thunder roared in the Cape,
with me you were astonished about that winter,
clouds covered the Hottentots Holland Mountains,
in that sunless weather a person can be cold,
here and there clouds drew open over the peaks,
in a cosy coat you were far past pretty,
clear was the cooing of the doves
when the sky suddenly opened dull blue on a winter-day;
we were Adam and Eve and God did just thought about the world,
in all of this we were in love and you and me
stood for moments in each other's arms,
with you against me, with each other speechless.
