The Lighthouse Poem by Tariq Ahmed

The Lighthouse

Sailing away on the rough seas
A ship carrying the fair maiden in the night breeze
Lost her way on the pursuit of a promised land
Searching for love on a remote treasured island

A lighthouse shines its bright rays
Protecting the stray vessel from dangerous ways
Firm, assured and strong it guides the lost boat
Smothering the craft with protection keeping it afloat

Enchanting lady captures the lonely heart of the tower
Touched by thoughts of caresses from the tender flower
Blinded by the radiance of her magical charm
Driven to ensure she remains free from harm

Realising the princess could show only disdain
It ponders its endless misery, solitude and pain
Releasing its clench it returns to its guiding role
Celebrating her beauty and the charms she does extol

On her journey she proceeds dutifully bound
Not stopping to think until her prize is found
Does not see that the light shines only for her
She dismisses desires of adoration from her protector

Alone on the shore the lighthouse remains upon high
Where it stays until it breathes its last sigh
Focused, upright and virtuous it sprays its rays
Guiding others, protecting them from hurt, for all days

Damsel safely steered back on her chosen course
The lighthouse steadily maintaining its force
On her journey of truth steadfast she is bound
Determined, resolute, tenacious and spellbound

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
While I remained willing to love this woman who ultimately betrayed me this poem came to mind. I capture the essence of the problem - lost on the seas - she saw me only as a passing glimpse - and then sailed on - lost, but still looking...for something else!
