The More You Love Poem by Mark Heathcote

The More You Love

Love will blister
Like those leaves full of grubs
The more you love
The more grubs will feed
But you have got to be steely strong.
And not just in a small way, a light breeze.

You have got to walk tall.
And let the mast of a ship
Catch a vehement wind
Till it's got nothing left
Except to admit defeat
And sing your name with its last breath.

The more you love
The more angels and demons
Envy your engaging smile
The more they want to throw daggers
And lead you blind into a fight
Not knowing who to attack.

The more you have to open your heart
The more you have to love
And learn not to despise
How they would turn all your promises into lies
Look, open your eyes
You are a shard of the sun,
And you have only now just begun to shine.
