The Pirate Who Drank Rum, Ate Mouldy Bread, & Sang Sea Shanties Poem by Maxwell B Anderson

The Pirate Who Drank Rum, Ate Mouldy Bread, & Sang Sea Shanties

Rating: 5.0

So, this lothario, comedian,
(a cheating god) looks like
a sweetheart, and says
'I'll make you a star...
You've got what it takes!
'(And I'll take what you've got) ',
is the motto I didn't see
in the smallprint contract.
My swashbuckling began
to the oceans I fled
tears in my eyes 'til I could
find a tavern and get drunk
and think of you.

Like Gielgud belting out and caressing
a nursery rhyme
gnawing on roasted meat.
Maidens holding me, levitating
above the banquet
hand me a poetry sheet.
One hand in my waistcoat and
at the bridge now, the clouded
galleon sails into clear port.
No more whale-songs of pain
to misinterpret and throw
me off course.

I've been mapping the stars
trying to write your name in
the evening heavens; well at
least I spelled I love you
A hundred times and I hear the
wind whisper your sweetness...

Starting with a hint of humour... and a bit of sadness. Lovely use of words. Enjoyed reading it.
