The Subtotal Of My Heart Again Poem by Mark Heathcote

The Subtotal Of My Heart Again

With courage, night turns to day
With faith, heartache can be banished
Put aside and made to be long gone
Without cheating, you can win
The subtotal of my heart again
Without lying, I might believe you
Darling, even if it's really, really hard too.

Darling, I might even let you sleep in my bed
With forgiveness, I might let you come back slowly
With a little fortitude and drunken remorse
I might also be able to completely forget you.
Without regret
Without looking back, disremember every kiss.

Darling, send me your December dreams
Tell me how you'll warm my winter bones
Darling, tell me how we'll be hotter,
Hotter than ember sparks
Darling sighs after we've made love
And you've forgotten to rollover
Lay gentle as a sprinkling of snow dust.
And then I might love you again
And call it fate or a disease.
