There Are Normal People Somewhere Poem by Shalom Freedman

There Are Normal People Somewhere

THERE ARE NORMAL PEOPLE SOMEWHERE

There are normal people somewhere
My father used to say there were-
We were not them
We are not that now
I am not one of them.
Except perhaps in some ways
The normal people love life
They are simply happy to be
They are calm and reasonable
They do not get all emotional over every little thing
They sit out on the porch and drink beer on Sunday

We are not normal
We're nervous
We get worked up easily
We're never happy just to be happy
We're always looking somewhere for something else
And we always have to watch out
Because they're out to get us
We are not normal
But we're who we are
And we love each other
Despite everything.
