Ahmad Shawqi

((1868–1932))

They tricked her is saying belle

They deceived her Saying she is beautiful
And the beautiful are tempted With praise,
Does she pretend to forget my name
When many lovers fall in her love
And grace,
If she sees me, she turns her face away
As if there were nothing between us
any way
Look, Smile, greeting,
Talking, appointment and a meeting
Then farewell that can be a remedy
Or farewell that may be a disease
When we were one day,
Do not ask how
were we were in love
Having what we like
And what we please
And over us chastity is a watcher,
We tried hard to deceive
But in vain
She tried to debauch me
And my heart to blame
You poets! you are the most kind people
Fear Allah and have mercy
for the heart of maids
As their heart are changeable,
Unstable and jumpy.
