Times Like These Poem by cheryl davis miller

Times Like These

In times like these many years ago
this sad mountain tale began.
When a country gal cast her eyes
on a simple hardworking man.

Now Kris was the spoiled baby girl
of a honest ‘Kentuck’ soul.
Who worked and saved for family
to provide was his only goal.

She met Bobby Lee home from the war
when she was fourteen.
They wed down at the company store
amidst taters and green beans.

Bobby worked hard to keep Kris
in the way she was use to.
Sometimes worked more than one job
he did what he had to do.

Eventually they headed up north
to the Ohio Promised Land.
In Appalachia times were hard
which most folks don’t understand.

They worked and scrimped
saved to started a company.
The American Dream finally came true
for Kris and Bobby Lee.

Then as so often happens
they moved into the fast lane.
Forgetting their upbringing
their ‘motto’ became gain.

The wealthy darkened the door
the poor must be lazy they guessed.
Forgetting where they'd come from
their life became shallow at best.

Their only child grew in that home
so he can't alone bear the blame.
Of having a such distant heart
and only being a son in name.

Tragedy struck them hard one day
in body, finances, and mind.
They failed to ask the Lord for help
then grew hopeless, bitter and blind.

Now with millions in property
they sit and talk of their needs.
Wonder why God's forsaken them;
as He stands at their door and pleads..
