Toast Sweet Solitude Poem by Edmund V. Strolis

Toast Sweet Solitude

Rating: 5.0

Two days of rain could not dampen the spirit
Alone in a cabin as the pelting continued
With plenty of firewood from sunnier days
Split and set aside for this rainy day

Delivered to this valley known only by me
Stocked canned goods, peaches and peas
With water enough to drown a blue whale
Plus bottles of spirits long hidden away

Drink now a toast to the death of the city
Lift a glass to the raw sweet solitude
Let the rain and the crickets mesmerize me
Let opinions and philosophy all fall away

Gone now is the maze of the human condition
At last absolution from yesterday's ghosts
Cleansed in the echo of far off distant thunder
Let pools of troubles rise and trickle away

I love this and can totally relate to how good for the spirit solitude can be. This doesn't have to be a lonely place as some people see it or feel it, yet a sense of knowing and listening to what your mind needs. This solitude is fascinating journey to self conservation. Very beautiful poem. Took me in mind to a place I would like to be in body. Thanks Eddie for sharing

Two days of rain could not dampen the spirit Alone in a cabin as the pelting continued These two lines tell lot of the story even at the beginning of your poem...the words chained together in this nice poem, but the togetherness of these words is all about solitude....solitude is not when we are alone but how we feel it...nice poem Edmund!

Edmund, you have an excellent voice- -your poem reads easily but it is full of imagery and a solitude that salutes a simpler, deeper, more sane life. However, your lovely poem will draw people out of the clamor and hostilities of the city to the quiet and deep flow of time in the solitude of country- - having seen the demise of the open land where I used to ride for hours without seeing another human being, I am agin increasing the encroachment of city folk by letting them know what they are missing. I know I am not sharing- - -but some things are diminished by sharing. ;)

Rain and solitude...such an ideal condition. Sometimes its necessary to hear one's inner voice away from the world's hassles. A beautiful poem that stirs the poet in us. I can absolutely relate to this longing for solitude in Nature's delightful company.

Thanku so much for the book recommendation. I'll try to get my hands on it. Yes, i agree with you. This identity crisis is indeed a universal phenomenon. Commercialism n corporate greed have eroded values. Your poem is so refreshing. There's a strong need to connect with the universe.

Yes it is ideal and yet not so much an escape but a reconnecting with the universe. Our world today is too fast, too much information bombards and values are lost. What I see is an identity crisis. People used to know their place and were comforted by tradition and appreciated one another. Now I see a society without shame. I strongly recommend the book 'Life at the bottom' by Theodore Dalrymple. A story that has reached America's shores.
