Today I Am A Leaf Poem by Kat Smith

Today I Am A Leaf

Today I am a leaf
Clinging to a tree cut down for its own good
Today I am a leaf
Grasping at the limb of a long dead memory
Hoping it might let me live
Today I am a leaf
Fallen from my tree collected off the ground and shoved into a trash bag by the very same people who cut down the tree that kept me from falling as if it was my fault that I was on the ground
Today I am a leaf
inching towards an incinerator that will turn me into dust and shoot me back into the sky where I belong
today I am a leaf
paying my dues for the capital crime of staying where we left me
with the added charge of premeditated uncontrollable circumstance
today I am a leaf
tomorrow I am dust
today I am a prisoner
tomorrow I am free
today I am a leaf
tomorrow I am the air you breath
