Vespers Poem by Thomas Noel Smith

Vespers

The evening song
Breathes its melody
Through open windows
Floating above candle flames
That dance and sway

Vespers have come
Hear the tingling in the air
The bell in the church
Ringing in the dusk

Give thanks
For those who dared
To believe
Their lives would awaken
Beyond the golden sunset
To a new dawning day

Pray the vespers for the souls
Who have shown us
The depth of life…
And then they left us alone,
To join death

Let us say our Aves
For those who taught us
To listen to the sounds of life
They whispered wisdom
To our hearts and souls
We will not see their like again.

Hear the chiming of the vesper bells
Evensong is here.
Let us say our prayers
For those who have gone
And for those of us who remain.
