Piper Brown (Salt Lake City, Utah)
What Is Going On?
I watch as you walk coldly by
Ice radiates off your posture
The tilt of your shoulder increases
My heart drops to the floor
I try to speak, words won’t form
Confusion consumes me
What is going on?
Your smile is brilliant
Your eyes shine bright blue
The words “I love you” reach my ears
Hands clutched tightly together
Warm scent fills my head
One look sends my mind reeling
What is going on?
Your eyes are weary, limbs weak
Smile half-meant, posture down-cast
Worry fills me and I touch your shoulder
You don’t look up
I play our song for you, no reaction
Pain fills my heart when you walk away
Confusion, hurt, and anger consumes me
What is going on?
