I had gone to Eagle Isle
to spend time with George; instead,
I spent that time with Mary,
truer companion with whom to break bread.

I had gone to Eagle Isle, Maine in June of 1976 to learn from the American poet George Oppen (1908-1984) , but ended up spending more time with Mary Oppen, an American painter and poet, with whom I had more in common.
