All I Ask Of You Poem by Leah Ayliffe

All I Ask Of You

That was the strange part,
and maybe the hard part.
Perhaps the easiest part really.
I don't remember falling in love with you.
I remember trying to float above it.
That's not how I imagined it happening,
to resist, to assume I wouldn't find it in you.
Until I knew you, and you were everything I used to talk about
everything I wanted to find, before I found you.
Or rather, before you found me.

It was quite the internal war for some time,
from the strange December day I shocked myself into knowing
that there was something I felt that was more
more than it was meant to be.
That was a terrifying time,
cause by then I had a very important friend in you
and someone so special that I never wanted to lose.

It was quite the internal war for some time,
until I decided to just let it be.
I soak in its light
I smile in the warmth.
It's like sunny days have come to stay
and the rays are illuminating from my own soul;

For I loved you as a friend first,
and friendship is all I'll ever ask of you.

Sometimes it seems when people are searching for love it runs ever farther away from them. When they are trying to avoid it, it falls in their lap

I'm with W.B. Yeats that platonic love is the 'strangest of all adventures, ' never being for reasons of ascent to contemplation of the divine as Socrates meant, instead some other unfortunate avoidance; but the sentiment here is conciliatory. Well written.
