Black Cat Poem by Michelle Claus

Black Cat

There I was, a costumed Queen,
Halloween last year,
Trick-or-treating, candy-eating -
Sudden-struck with fear!

A cackling crone with crooked nose
Cast a spell or two;
A wicked witch of Cloven-Toes
Hoaxed me, hexed me, too.

She quickly banished all my sweets,
Vanquished all my will;
Jealous, zealous hag of heat
Moved in for the kill.

She rent to rags and mauled with mold
Royal robe of mine,
Crushed to crumbs my crown of gold -
Gear for which I pine.

Then the beldam burnished fast,
Polished off my doom at last:

She turned my skin to silk-black fur,
My two feet to four paws,
My human voice to feline purr
My fingernails to claws.

Now when Hallows Eve occurs,
Perched on sill I spy,
Wondering which kid's wear will lure
That helldame's evil eye.
