Burn Under Examination Poem by Mark Heathcote

Burn Under Examination

I can't hold down any more fires
I want to explore how you'll burn,
Burn under examination
Of course, there'll be sparks
Of course, there'll be embers burning red
Of course, there'll be flames wanting to live.
Leap and later forgive.
I can't embrace you without another kiss.
I want to clasp the flames I always knew would hiss.
Burn under examination
Of course, flames will howl
Of course, forests will be turned into cinders
Of course, lava will flow and cool
But not until my heart - it has been turned into charcoal tonight.
