It was like cupid lived within
Her soul shooting arrows through
Those eyes as they pierced
My scaly rough exterior
She moved through the crowd
As if she was parting the ocean
The mood was electric
Shocked as she drew nearer
But I the artist drew an escape
I made my retreat
Before I dared to surrender
Weak kneed and failing feet
Quickly this became a game
Of cat and mouse
I reassured myself
That this was my house
Then like a shifting shadow come alive
She caught the tail of my coat
And said hello, one word full of life
I said goodbye as I killed the moment
Not so fast she said
Just one dance, just one glance
2 stepped into a trance
As her memory walked away
Your imagary is great in this poem! The arrows in her eyes, your scaly exterior, her as a shifting shadow coming alive-Excellent!
Cupid is usually described as a sniper but in this woman's body his sneak attacks are really devious. I have to tuck this Cupid reference away because he does not appear again but his presence suggests an outside agency is at work and that means the man and woman are not exercising freedom. That's an important element in the man's skittishness. Now if this woman is a BABE with a knock-out body, I'd think he's a fool to run from her. But that kind of adolescent fantasy is simply not part of this poem. This is a poem about something much larger and more serious than a dead-end sexual attraction. The man is wary from the beginning. He simply cannot trust this woman's intention. Is she a control freak? a vampire-lover, the type that takes but does not give? a mad lover?
This is wonderful...the emotional intensity, the energy in the atmosphere...you can almost feel it through your words. A Lovely write! And the last stanza...I adore it!
