Common Sense (In Memorial) Rip Poem by Luke Easter

Today we mourn the passing of our beloved dear friend,
“Common Sense” passed away but no one is sure when,
Aw-come-on, as he was sometimes affectionately called,
No headlines, evening news, sermon, no one is appalled?

There is no record of his birth he might even have been her,
Could of been both as wisdom from he and she would occur,
From remembering things like when to come out of the rain,
Categorized as a genus pundits would label Common insane.

Understanding principles behind the early bird gets the worm,
As classmates were at the party, guess who was in the dorm?
Sayings like, “maybe it was my fault” & “life isn’t always fair, ”
Plus, “nothing takes the place of hard work to get you there.”

Sound financial policies, “do not spend more than you earn, ”
Could be this one I'm not the only one still struggling to learn,
And the reliable strategies, “adults not children are in charge, ”
Neither should teenagers have Internet use of the credit cards.

The autopsy confirmed the heat attack was sudden & massive,
Fell face first shattering expensive Ivy League reading glasses,
Headlines, “Teacher assaulted by student defends self.” Well?
Must of been the part where, “educator faces 10 years in jail.”

As criminals get free dental, medical, housing and legal advice,
Victims might have to mortgage their house not once but twice,
Those found guilty usually get probation for their first offense,
Court systems no longer use, you guessed it, “Common Sense.”

Another article, that woman who spilled hot coffee on her lap,
Took it to court, McDonalds received a $750,000 facial slap,
Maybe the plane that flew 300 miles to far, pilots took a nap,
Or the gizmo in your car that took the place of our road map.

Gadgets, using modern technology lessens the ability to think,
Whereas it only used to be drugs or too much alcohol to drink,
Not that it couldn’t be referred to in an emergency or a pinch,
But, should that device malfunction where is, “Common Sense? ”

Parents Truth and Trust, a brother Reason preceded in death,
Alive are cousins I know my rights and Don’t hold your breath,
Two neighbor’s, I am innocent plus Someone else is to blame,
Not many attended the funeral because most forgot the name.

Simply look at the story of Correctional Officer Jayme Biendl,
Lost her life because, “Common Sense” was not around to tell,
Strong & guilty at same confined area as the innocent & meek?
Tell me, what intelligent farmer uses a fox to protect his sheep?

U.S. Department Of Justice paid, Fast & Furious, weapons sent,
To Mexican drug cartels as one gun killed a Border Patrol Agent,
911 Terrorists a at flying school were not concerned how to land,
Was it not suspicious, well, actually no because cash was on hand.

That aviation company, training pilots only in tune to dollar & cents,
And no answers, of course not whereas questions would present,
An opportunity for a huge loss of revenue given to another school,
Would they allow, “Common Sense” to put profits on a toilet stool?

Multiple stories, incidents abound, thousands of examples galore,
There are so-so many to choose from let’s see, here’s one more,
Uzi mirco-machine gun placed in the hands of an 8 year old kid,
Christopher Bizilj losing half his head due to what the adults did.

A thought that Common would be missed didn’t last for very long,
It is obvious from these stories most didn’t know Sense was gone,
As the incompetent, unqualified, idiot, imbeciles, steadily carry on,
Revive Motown and the Four Tops #1, “It’s The Same Old Song.”

At a buffet last Friday a mother told her son, “let’s go” he screamed,
Too embarrassed mama spoon fed little Billy his chocolate ice cream,
I looked at Milton, he looked at me and we began to shake our head,
He said, “well that confirms it for me without a doubt, Sense is dead.”

So, Common is no longer Common because statistics now rule,
”The Peter Principle” of old is now a state of the art new school,
Is it too late to find Common's grave to revive DNA? Sure bet!
Otherwise how can you explain mighty America so deep in debt?

Drugs flow into this country on the Mexican Border, homicide is sky high,
However, would it not spiral downwards if the Americans refused to buy?
Military deaths, catastrophic injuries exploded with the 2nd war with Iraq,
Yet, there'd be no 2nd time if G.H. Bush had continued that 1st attack.

Operation Red Dragonfly, former Marine crosses country for Veteran's health,
While, 'Common Sense' would note soldiers paved the road of freedom & wealth,
While America has these same fighting men and women struggling for health care,
And for many, physical disabilites has them applying for & being denied welfare.

As Presidents, Veterans and even Columbus have a national holiday,
1983 it’s signed into law & yet it was years before all recognized MLK,
Make-up a date for Common’s death so we can put a reef on his grave,
With all those accomplishments can’t we at least have a yearly parade?

Matter of fact how do we justify half of today’s senseless idyllic crap?
Whereas, the answers are so simple once we take time to look back,
As every coach will tell you games are won mostly by a solid defense,
Life is most complicated when we operate without, “Common Sense! ”
