For deadline poets, I suppose,
like William Deede and Calvin Trillin,
a poem’s like a daily dose,
effective more than Penicillin
is nowadays against the clap,
since rhyme for poets is a curse
that like a drug their health can sap,
as bad as syphilis in verse.
