Death To Self, Life In The Spirit Poem by Cynthia Buhain-baello

Death To Self, Life In The Spirit

Death To Self, Life In The Spirit

We cannot find God in a seminary,
Or imagine we have Him through a degree.
For instruction and learning cannot fulfill
The life from the Spirit, for the letter kills.

We look at appearances, God looks at the heart.
For change to be real, it is God Who imparts.
Certificates and titles, those positions are empty,
Man's view of honor doesn't count in eternity.

Self is the opaque veil that covers our eyes,
It seeks Man's applause, yet we don't realize
That we died and were crucified, we ceased to be.
We can't make ourselves perfect or work to be holy.

God gives grace to the humble, the lowly in spirit.
The contrite of heart, His Spirit will meet.
Those who know they're imperfect, who need the Savior-
Are the ones He regards, those He honors.

"He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." (2 Corinthians 3: 6)

"The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you —they are full of the Spirit and life."
(John 6: 63)
