I Could Not Be There Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

I Could Not Be There

I wanted to be.
Whatever you wished,
From me to see.
And in time I tried.
Not to realize,
You would decide...
To become someone else.
Someone I wished,
Returned.
Back to the one,
I wanted and tried...
To be desperately.
But I could not be there,
For someone I no longer recognize.
To be who they wanted.
Since what they wanted,
I only wanted to do,
For the 'you' I believed I knew.
But apparently,
We did not know each other.
