I had a lifetime to tell you I loved you,
And yet when your life was all through
You took your last breath on this earth and I cried
For I doubted that you really knew.
- -
I feared that my words would be empty,
Forced by my unwilling tongue
But then at the last I regretted the past
When I realized my chances were done.
I intended to write you a poem,
Telling you just what you mean
To everyone on this old earth that you touched
And least of all, most of all, me.
I never did write you that poem,
I never did tell you the words
I never expressed in the way I do best
That I love you more than the whole world.
You'll never be able to read this
Unless you can read it from there
So instead I will warn all of those left behind
That family is precious and rare.
They say you should tell all your loved ones
You love them - tell them while you can
I used to think of this as a cliché
But now I swear I understand.
- -
I never did tell you I loved you,
Not sufficient for me, anyway
In thousands of tongues I could never express
I love you - that's all I can say.
A beautiful and heartfelt writing! Comes from your heart and wonderfully expresses your deepest feelings. I'm a firm believer that your Papa can somehow know you wrote this and knows how you're feeling. You did such a great job on this!
