I Salute Dad Poem by Holly Jamestone

I Salute Dad

He mowed the lawn and put the grass in gunny sacks
Before piling Jami, Marykay and Greta into the 1962 beige Ford Galaxy
And heading out east for our weekly ritual of feeding horses
As they gratefully sniffed our hands and neighed in delight

He took us out for rootbeer floats and to The Denver Drumstick
He gave me breakfast every morning before school, and he always knew
The week that was best for flying kites mid-March at Garland Park’s Lollypop Lake
Because he so dearly loved his three daughters

He took us to Washington Park and allowed us to fish
Knowing full well that all the fish we caught
And begged him to let us keep in a fish bowl would
Be in heaven by the next morning

He was always buying toilet paper and bananas
And being the best Dad he could be because
His own father predeceased his birth by two weeks
And he loved his adoptive father, Nick, as much as a boy could love

He taught me about Life and Love and Giving and Caring
And I now give back to him all the love he has bestowed
All the lessons I have learned, as I salute Daddy
John Perich on his special Father’s Day.
