I-Am-Here Poem by Mark Heathcote

I-Am-Here

We don't want a love that's
here today, gone tomorrow
here today, gone tomorrow
here today, gone tomorrow
love is seeking a way out at times
but first, it must discover a way in
like a bookworm, it must devour
Its own dustjacket from cover to cover
and write in the margins of every chapter
I-am-here, I-am-here-my-lover
touch my spine, read me cover to cover
but know that when you and I reach an end
I must go. I never asked to be just good friends.
I never wanted it to be ever over
I never wanted to leave you,
but what could I do?
