Missing Button Poem by Madathil Rajendran Nair

Missing Button

Rating: 5.0

Eh, today on the walkway
Of this pretty town near Seattle
My wife lost a unique, colorful button
Of an exotic top she bought
At some incense-smelling boutique
In the Arabian Gulf

Prodded by her I set on
To search for the missing button
Following her doggedly
Back the walkway
My head bent all along
Looking for the precious loss

Passers by smiled at me
Said ‘Hi'
Neither did I hear nor did I see
An uncommunicative Indian
Conifers and maples on the road side
Smiled I didn't see
The setting sun, his face down
Sunk sulking at the indifferent me

A world was lost for a fool
Looking for a button
That fastened a mortal bosom
Like I lost long ago
A whole world
When a love cast me to the winds
And went her way
Leaving me trapped
Ruminating and ruing a stupid loss
Over tear-wet pillows
Missing beautiful sunsets
Talkative birds, trees and hills
All the while
Oh, such is life
Get up and enjoy ye stupid

Western society is so preoccupied with the trivial that they miss out on real life. IPhones replace observation, status supplants relationships and materialism supersedes true enjoyment.

What a lovely piece of writing. How a trivial moment of life can become so significant n trigger memories of the past. Oh, such is life.....how we miss the precious moment of our life lamenting over a loss. A trivial incident leads the poet to reach a philosophical conclusion. Such great depth this write carries.10

It reminds me of good old Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady who expresses his agony searching for the lost glove. Beautiful poem on a simple incident that happens.

A world was lost for a fool Looking for a button That fastened a mortal bosom Like I lost long ago A whole world When a love cast me to the winds And went her way Leaving me trapped Ruminating and ruing a stupid loss Yes, at times tiny worthless objects steal our precious time from us, which could have been lived a better way. Thanks poet for sharing this lovely poem. 10 for it. Subhas

The message of this poem is that life is to be lived and not frittered away with worrying. You have blended the two incidents splendidly and synergistically. 10/10

Beautiful message very well conveyed. Very true said, we are often lost in thoughts and miss the beautiful opportunities that tells us hi. We miss all the colors when our eyes are struck in one color and the one that is missing from us.

We waste our life crying over trifles and missing the vast panorama of beautiful sights and wonderful possibilities around us.....! It is wiser to act as soon as we realize our foolhardiness! But there is no point in lamenting over past mistakes.... The inevitable has to happen! Remember......over the past we have no control, but the present is still in our hold.... From a trivial incident, you have drawn a philosophical perception of life! A 10

Our life span is incredibly short and we often waste it in the pursuit of the trivial, don't we? This was an excellent and piercing way to get that point across- - I love stories be they in prose or poetry form or spoke around the campfire. Stories launch thought and perhaps resolve to enjoy the moment we are in or the memories that we have in the end will be of pavement and not skies. Great write! 10
