My Love Poem by Samantha McKinnon

My Love

My love passed through your chest
And devolved to chaos.
I entered your life
And began to change
And curdle your heart.
The void I tried to fill with you
Sucked and ripped
The sun out of your sky—
Drained the passion
out of your eyes.
The curse and burden
of my life
Coursed through your veins
And filled you with a strength
That rose from the anger
And disappointment
That I instilled in you
With every damned touch.
I understand, now,
Why you did it.
I understand, now,
Why I tried to calm you—
Why I tried to get away—
Why I tried to hold your hand.
I understand, now,
Why I apologized to you
When I walked into the night's impenetrable darkness,
Of which I was terribly envious.
I understand, now,
That I made you do it.
I understand, now,
That we are equal.
