Not Long Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Not Long

Not long
Not long
The verse is like lightning
The chant as thunder
Roars
Thunder that grumbles
Loud
Then stops.

THE VERSE IS LIKE LIGHTNING and lightning is extremely powerful in a very circumscribed area, and then it is gone. It's the brevity of even this brilliant display of light and power which preoccupies the poet. Transience dogs all of our endeavors., it mocks our attempt to make a permanent mark of our presence and domination in the world. ultimately, we can all of us, from the strongest to the weakest, repeat John Keats' despairing words, I AM ONE WHOSE NAME WAS WRIT IN WATER.
