On Covid-19 Poem by Nadine Kjaerbaek

On Covid-19

Covid-19

"When the Covid-19 fiasco happening, I watched society become more and

more paranoid. Much of this mentality was fueled by media

misinterpretation of the pandemic, along with mass hysteria. It is

hard to say if the media triggered mass hysteria or reflected it. I

suspect it was a vicious cycle.

People tend to become worried and out of control during

pandemics and national emergencies. The media can have a calming or

crazed influence. It is a factor in the chemical mixture brewing, a

catalyst for positive or negative change. The media never created

problems or reactions, but certainly contributed to them.

However, I must state that I find poverty, homelessness, and

job discrimination to be the harshest realities facing today's women

and families. I find the lack of commitment to alleviating these

issues in the face of this pandemic to be upsetting. I am lucky, I

suppose, that I do not have children.

I never had my own children primarily for economic reasons. My

income was generally less than $30,000 Canadian and I was unmarried. I

might have considered adoption or having my own children if I made

$60,000 to $90,000 in a steady, secure job, with a leased condo or

apartment, car, and $100,000 in the bank. That was not my scenario."
