Peace In Europe Poem by James S Newcomb Lang

Peace In Europe

Peace, hope and happiness returned to us today
With the surrender of Germany, on the 8th of May

And although we've still got Japan to beat
We can see the end's in sight
For they'll not resist much longer, the combined allied might

But for now it's time to celebrate
With a party in every street
To sing and dance and laugh, with everyone we meet

And the bells are ringing throughout the land
They toll for victory
They're rung to celebrate freedom, and a return of liberty

We thank you Mr Churchill
Even though the fight's been hard
You never promised an easy war, we've certainly been chard

Dunkirk wasn't our finest hour
But we got the troops back home
And for far too long we fought our foe, standing all alone

The Blitz never darkened our hearts
As the few stood against the many
And we fought them back in the desert, eventually defeating Gerry

And when the Americans arrived
We started to hit back harder
At first the soft underbelly of Italy, then with D-Days great armada

It wasn't all done by Christmas
But did we really think it would be?
And now we've beaten Hitler and ended his rain of tyranny

So sing and dance and celebrate
Rejoice and follow the band
For the war in Europe is over, on the sea, in the air and on the land.
