Brava, Sandra! This is a summons for poets to contribute to society by affirming peace. We know poetry can serve any cause, and war is one of them. It's a choice, how will you use this gift of poetic language: to stir up martial fervor? to extol the blessings of peace? Think of Virgil. He delighted in writing Georgics: Four poems about rural life, the seasons unfolding the year, hard work rewarded by the summer harvest; more hard work rewarded by the autumn harvest; and at the end of the book, the love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. But how do people remember Virgil? For fulfilling the Emperor's command to write the War Epic, the AENEID. We poets today can make our free
and honest choice of what cause we will support by our gifts and efforts.
