Sweet Damaged Smile Poem by Paula Glynn

Sweet Damaged Smile

The audiences' member's sweet damaged smile
Watching the stage hosting a world famous rock star
A legendary player of the electric guitar
Who made his band's brilliant debut rock album go far

Those childhood false satisfying sweets
And unfortunate happy childhood memories from the newsagent
Loving chewy confectionery with regret
That tastes the whole tongue with mistaken sweetness

Mars bars and snickers and other candy bars
Caramac a treat too often along with Twix
Cheating once nice childhood white teeth
With their alluring and evil sweet tricks

When teeth should be brushed
Twice daily under parental guidance
Teaching their important children hygiene
And protecting them from a sweet damaged smile

Dentistry vital to dental health
Even if not from a family home of wealth
White teeth always possible whether rich or poor
The NHS dentist seen and advice followed

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
An example of the trick allure and temptation
Of a perpetually sweet tooth
The dentist always having to tell this truth

Many effective dental treatments available
From tooth extractions to unlucky fillings
To fitted braces and tooth whitening
Cleaning daily with fluoride toothpaste

Sweets forgotten: their attraction disappearing
No one wanting an ugly sweet damaged smile
Not when beautiful white teeth pleases others
And makes them wish for the same smile

The world of loving adult relationships
To benefit from self-care and common sense
Nice teeth from past, present and future tense
Fresh breath needed for sweet and lovely kisses

Rotten and poorly cared for teeth
A turn off and deeply off-putting
No one liking yellow and wonky
Teeth that are poor to the core

The rock star never having a sweet damaged smile
Being a super cool man worth his while
Singing with straight white teeth on show
The rock star with dental hygienic teeth that brightly glow.
