Thanksgiving Assignment Poem by Robert Rorabeck

Thanksgiving Assignment

Grandma and Grandpa
Sell Christmas trees
On Thanksgiving,
Under tents
In Miami-
Palm trees swaying
To an ocean breeze-
Daddy sells cake at the
Fleamarket-
Abbu (grandma)will
Fly from Shanghai
On Thansgiving-
My sister and I
Promise not to fight-
Didi (baby brother)
has a new tooth
For Thanksgiving,
Mommy practices violin-
There are so many stories
To tell for Thansgiving.
I have heard six
Already-
Pilgrims and Indians
have given thanks
For Thanksgiving
(They teach us this in
school) -
Thanksgiving is never
On a Wednesday between
Halloween and
Christmas-
And mommy, daddy,
Grandma, grandpa,
Me, maymay (little sister) ,
Didi (little brother) ,
Abbu and Jojo (uncle)
Will come together
and enjoy a
festive dinner,
a cornucopia spread out
in our minds and
in our
hearts.

From far away,
We will hold hands for
Thanks giving and pray for
money, gold,
Good health, and the coming
of a happy Christmas-
Closing our eyes and imagining
Snow falling on so many toys
Outside lying in our sunny yards.
