The Anointed Assyrian Poem by Susie Gharib

The Anointed Assyrian

For M.A.

Behold, my valiant Commander-in-Chief,
I'm thus ordained to be the Star on your shield,
My blood, the sacramental wine which lips of valour beseech.

Relieve, my gallant Commander-in-Chief,
The scars and tears on Jerusalem's disfigured cheeks,
My heart, the slaughtered lamb upon which their vultures screech.

Reveal, my resolute Commander-in-Chief,
The amputated truth they nailed to a wall so drenched with fears,
My tongue, the gale to denude their figures of speech.

Redeem, my intrepid Commander-in-Chief,
The honour of dispirited nations, deflowered by debauchees,
Then reclaim the six-petaled flower that is now within your reach.
