The Beaten Path Poem by Ben mcelfresh

The Beaten Path

Walking alone down the beaten path
A lit cigarette burning away in my hand
Looking in every direction around me
As i swear i can feel you around me

Everywhere i look i see nothing but darkness
Not even a shadow out of place
I stop at a bench and sit down
I close my eyes and throw my head back

I spill every curse word i know
I throw my fists against the wooden seat
I break every knuckle in my hand
I sit back and let the tears roll

I stand back up and walk away
I light another cigarette and look back around me
This time a cold chill erupts through me
I know you're somewhere near me

I dropp to my knees and scream your name
The only response i hear are crickets in the distance
I stand up and look to the sky and ask why
Then i look back around me and realize it's all pointless
