The Daughter Was Named Mary Poem by Sayeed Abubakar

The Daughter Was Named Mary

Rating: 5.0

When she was born,
The moon of the sky smiled.
But her mother's bright face
Turned pale.

She recollected her past
And got frightened.
Being a girl was a matter of shame
In her dark village.
She had been neglected
Throughout her life.

She looked at her daughter's beautiful face;
Tears flooded her two deep eyes.

When her hubby came to her,
She cried, 'Alas! I've given birth
To a daughter. Let me flee taking her away.'
He asked her smiling, 'Why? '
Her father-in-law rushed and asked, 'Why? '
Her mother-in-law rushed and asked, 'Why? '

She stared at their faces and said,
'Nobody loves a girl on earth.'

Her father-in-law said laughing,
'Time has changed.
Now there's no difference
Between a girl and a boy.'

She couldn't believe her ears.
She again stared at their smiling faces.
Her baby cried in hunger. Her
Mother-in-law shouted, 'Go you all.
Let us care our baby.'

The male left naming the daughter Mary.
