The Fight Always Finds Him Poem by Patti Masterman

The Fight Always Finds Him

He goes out into public life
Into stores and offices, meeting places and parking lots
And he is amazed that all the angry, unreasoning hatred
Fighting in his guts, every day of his life
Recognizes and attacks him again, in those very places
Going on only the least clue or sign of individuality
He is brave enough to display.

It always surprises him again
Even though he carries an unfinished war everywhere
Hidden inside of him,
So that it is always deeply within him,
Wherever he goes; it doesn't matter where.

And whenever he finally dies,
He will be the lone soldier in the grave,
Cursed in secret, under everyones breath,
Who could never gave up the fight,
Because it started long before he enlisted-
The fight will always find him.
